Crowborough, UK, 10 February 2012 - Our free Webinar on ‘Demystifying the technology and physics associated with gas analysis’ takes place Thursday 16 February 2012, 0800 GMT / 1100 GMT / 1600 GMT. read more...

Tuneable diode laser spectroscopy (TDLS) is a unique analysis method that has widespread use in industrial gas measurements. Diode lasers enable specific detection of gas molecular absorption lines. Although these unique properties provide significant advantages over conventional measurement methods in some applications, there are aspects that affect the accuracy of laser measurements, if not considered properly.

During this webinar Bahram Alizadeh, (Specialist Research Engineer, Servomex) and Karen Gargallo, (Product Specialist TDLS, Servomex) will discuss laser spectroscopy technology with an emphasis on second harmonic wavelength modulation spectroscopy as applied to laser gas analysers. They will also explain the parameters that affect the accuracy of the TDLS gas analysis; such as the effect of window purge (for in-situ installations); line broadening influence of pressure, temperature and background gas composition; and optical interference noise caused by the coherent property of laser light.

Members of the Servomex expert team will be online all day at Servomex’s LinkedIn account at www.linkedin.com/company/servomex for live discussion and feedback

The only truly portable battery powered gas analyser with MCERTS certification, the MiniMP is a portable analyser designed to offer single or dual measurement of O2 and carbon dioxide (CO2).  Offering accurate, stable and reliable measurement of O2 using Servomex’s non-depleting paramagnetic sensor technology, MiniMP delivers measurement accuracy ranges of between ±0.1% to ±0.02% O2.  The approval of EN15267-3 (MCERTS V3.3, Annex F) makes the MiniMP suitable for use as an SRM (Source Reference Method) according to EN14789 for verifying installed CEMS to the requirements of EN 14181.

Offering the benefits of larger and more expensive equipment in a compact, easy to use package, the MiniMP offers users an extensive range of features including audible alarms, datalogging and RS232 outputs.

CO2 is measured using digital infra red technology, a non-depleting technology that eliminates the requirement for regular replacement of sensors. Both the infra-red CO2 and paramagnetic O2 sensors give excellent rejection of contaminants and their non-depleting design ensures they will last many years without requiring replacement.

A tower form reduces valuable footprint, while the MiniMP can be powered by lithium ion cells for users who need reliability on the move.  A high definition LCD display shows the measured component level in a large, easy-to-read display, alongside indications of analyser status, alarms and output range. Additional options include single or dual gas measurements, 4-20mA outputs and an internal pump.

In addition to usage in the verification of CEMS systems, applications for the MiniMP range include usage in laboratories, air separation units, gas bottling plants, medical gas storage facilities, as well as use in respiration and physiology studies.

“The MiniMP is already established as a benchmark for excellence in portable gas analysis,” says Chris Cottrell, Managing Director, Servomex.

Servomex's World-Leading Technologies Highlighted by the Financial Times

UK - Servomex's world-leading technologies have been featured in the Financial Times, one of the world's leading business publications. read more...

As part of a series of articles on UK manufacturing, FT reporter Peter Marsh spoke to John O’Higgins, Chief Executive of parent company Spectris, at the Servomex Technical Centre in Crowborough, UK.  The interview focused on the macroeconomic trends which influence the demand for Spectris products, as well as the importance of specialist skills in the manufacture of precision instrumentation, as demonstrated by Servomex’s world-leading gas analysis equipment.

Peter Marsh experienced at first hand the intricate skills required in creating our Paramagnetic oxygen sensor technology, describing the expertise required as being “mid-way between those of a Venetian glassblower and a Swiss watchmaker to fashion a tiny glass sphere at the end of a thin tube.”

"I'm not aware of many other businesses that can do this kind of work, and we don't want to teach anyone how to do it,” John O’Higgins said. “Keeping control of this manufacturing technology is a key to staying ahead of competitors."

New SERVOTOUGH FluegasExact delivers the industry-leading solution to combustion analysis

28 July 2011 - Building on the success of the acclaimed Fluegas 2700 combustion gas analyser, the SERVOTOUGH FluegasExact integrates Servomex's unique Flowcube flow sensor technology to give users even more confidence in their combustion gas measurements read more...

Armed with an integral sampling system, custom-designed for operation in some of the hottest and most extreme combustion environments, the FluegasExact is the analyser of choice for the most demanding hydrocarbon processing and power generation applications.

At the heart of the SERVOTOUGH FluegasExact’s exceptional performance are Servomex’s patented zirconium oxide cell for oxygen measurement and a thick film catalytic sensor for measuring carbon monoxide and COe combustibles.

Able to measure oxygen on a wet basis, the FluegasExact’s advanced zirconia technology requires no external sample conditioning system, while minimal calibration requirements and a long operational life of up to ten years ensure reduced maintenance costs. The FluegasExact’s thick film calorimeter technology monitors CO levels with high precision, giving sufficient sensitivity and speed of response to enable the combustion process to be continuously optimised for increased process safety and efficiency. Combined, the performance of both technologies improves flame stability, reduces NOx, SO3 and CO emissions and has been proven to save up to four percent of fuel costs per year.

Both sensors are installed within Servomex’s custom-designed heated sensor head, which has a low-flow extractive design that attaches directly to the flue. Manufactured to the highest quality standards, this ensures exceptional performance in the toughest environments and with the minimum of maintenance.

The FluegasExact’s exceptional measurement sensor capability is augmented by Servomex’s advanced Flowcube flow sensor technology. Delivering an industry first by enabling true system diagnostics of the sample flow, Flowcube gives total assurance that the measurement is valid and responding within specification. Placed in-line with the measurement sensors, Flowcube allows user-defined alarm levels to be set with confidence, either to enhance preventative maintenance or to act as a flow failure alarm output.

Flowcube technology therefore enables operators to implement a preventative rather than reactive maintenance agenda for analyser flow control, avoiding costly plant downtime by allowing the scheduling of routine safety checks and sample system maintenance – a particularly useful function where operations are being run with minimum personnel on-site.

In addition, a new Sulphur Resistant combustibles sensor enables the thick film sensor to operate at elevated levels of SO2 that normally inhibit catalytic sensors.

Customer-designed for high temperature processes up to 1750°C (3182°F), the FluegasExact is ideal for use in extreme heated environments. This resilience makes it the analyser of choice for controlling a wide range of combustion processes, including use in process heaters, utility boilers, thermal crackers, incinerators and furnaces.

New TCD technology brings class-leading argon and nitrogen measurement to SERVOPRO MultiExact

28 July 2011 - Now offering using class-leading measurements of argon and nitrogen using the world's first true Thermal Conductivity (TCD) process gas analyser, the Servomex SERVOPRO MultiExact further raises the standard as a comprehensive analyser solution for ASU plants. read more...

Servomex TCD uses innovative new TruRef technology to eliminate the distorting effects of changing thermal mass and thermal convection, giving exceptional measurement accuracy and stability that augments measurements for O2 Purity, O2 Control, O2 Trace, CO2 Trace and N2O Trace made by Servomex’s paramagnetic, zirconia cell and Gfx photometric technologies respectively.

TruRef technology co-locates the reference and measure elements under isothermal conditions in the sample gas, eliminating the effects of changing sample conditions such as pressure and flow.  The result is a measurement which delivers class-leading performance for drift accuracy, linearity and repeatability, making it ideal for use in product purity and process control applications. In addition, TruRef technology avoids the measurement inaccuracies inherent in competitor katharometer technologies, which use a sealed reference cell or flowing reference gas. Cost-of-ownership is also reduced due to longer calibration intervals and avoiding the requirement for a reference gas.

The TCD measurement is fully supported through stable and robust performance offered by the SERVOPRO MultiExact, with control optimised via a full range of communication options that includes RS232 serial communications, Ethernet connectivity and Modbus via RS485. The MultiExact also offers NAMUR-compliant fault relay functions, allowing alarms, maintenance and service-in-progress messages to be communicated remotely.

The MultiExact is available in bench top, panel or 19” rackmount options, with a dual component capability enables two measurements to be installed in a compact short chassis, reducing the unit’s footprint to help save valuable space.

The MultiExact with new TCD measurement is therefore the ideal single-unit solution for process control and product purity measurement for ASU plants, as well as for use in argon recovery.

Users can also add custom gases to the database using a simple data collection procedure.

The DF-745SG stores detailed data that identifies the components and volumes in a mixture as well as the date, time and moisture content of the blend. This data can be displayed on the analyzer’s built-in data screen or downloaded via USB drive as a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet report.

The DF-745SG is available in a 19 inch rack mount suitable for a fixed system and is light enough for cart or other mobile applications. The analyzer can be quickly moved from port to port courtesy of isolation hardware and software routines that virtually eliminate long dry down times often associated with these applications. The application firmware allows the user to easily configure the system to meet the particular needs of the plant using pre-defined blend templates.  The hardware design allows the user to start the unit up quickly and easily to begin accruing all the financial benefits that the DF-745SG has to offer.

The DF 745SG is therefore ideal for a range of specialty gas production applications including monitoring specialty blends for quality control.

SERVOTOUGH Fluegas combustibles sensor upgrade improves performance in high sulphur applications

Crowborough, UK, 8 March 2011 - Servomex, the global leader in gas analysis, has announced a new combustibles sensor upgrade kit for the SERVOTOUGH Fluegas (2700) combustion gas analyser. read more...

The new Sulphur Resistant combustibles sensor upgrade kit enables a Tfx sensor operating at standard temperature to operate at an elevated temperature, improving performance in high sulphur applications, where excess levels of SO2 can inhibit traditional catalytic sensor function.

In addition to improved performance, the sensor upgrade will increase longevity and reduce service downtime where SO2 levels generally exceed 1000 ppm. On applications where the existing combustibles sensor has less than 13 months operational life left, the upgrade is anticipated to extend sensor life.

The ability for the combustibles sensor to operate at higher temperatures makes it ideal for a number of applications where coal or heavy oil is the fuel,, making it ideal for use in industries such as power generation – validated by the highly successful sensor upgrade at Drax power station in Selby, UK, which uses SERVOTOUGH Fluegas analysers to help maintain its high ranking in the UK’s league of efficient coal burning power stations.

The Fluegas’s High Sensitivity sensor specification remains appropriate for applications where high levels of sulphur are not present, including applications such as natural gas and light oils.

The Sulphur Resistant combustibles sensor is suitable for all models of the Fluegas (2700A1, 2700A2, 2700B1, 2700C1). The upgrade kit is currently available for general purpose versions of the sensor head, with a kit for Div 2 and Zone 2 analysers to follow during 2011.
